Gurmeet Mattu
Gurmeet Mattu was born and lives in Glasgow, Scotland, but is of Indian (Sikh) descent. He trained as a journalist at the Polytechnic of Central London in 1983/84 and subsequently worked in that profession for various print periodicals as well as on BBC Radio Scotland.
His first calling however was in the writing of fiction and though he'd hoped to become a novelist, destiny took him towards dramatic writing. He has written for various professional theatre companies in Scotland, including 7:84, TAG and STG. Stage plays include Cowboys & indians and Every Bloody Sunday. For radio he has had broadcast several plays on BBC Radio including These Magic Words and Sick As a Parrot. In TV he has sold two sitcom pilots, Coconuts and Doc, to the BBC though these were never produced. His screenplay Disciple won a Scottish Screen/DNA Films First Draft Award.
He is a qualified trainer (SVQ in training & Development Level III)
He has some other (non writing) strings to his bow, though they all employed some level of writing. He was the Project Co-ordinator of the Glagow Mela in 1990 when Glasgow was the European Capital of Culture. it was the largest Asian cultural festival ever held in Europe, and he subsequently ran the Mela for another three years.
